    Do you want to be a key team player with the fastest growing currency supplier in the world? Crane Currency in Nashua, NH is looking for a Formulation Scientist to support our R&D team. Drawing upon your expertise, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise in the development of ink formulations, testing, and processing. This key position will support product development efforts from laboratory concept to full manufacturing and production, with special consideration toward testing and in-process controls. By conducting ink research in the fields of pigments, optics, materials and/or chemistry, this position will develop a more comprehensive, fundamental understanding of inks including the characterization of our inks and pigments as well as the interaction of these inks and pigments with various icon structures that are commonly used.     Key Responsibilities include:

    • Develop a correlation between ink rheology/particle size and icon tool efficiency.
    • Characterize, categorize, and develop a full fundamental understanding of our inks and pigments.
    • Aid in the generation and evaluation of ink formulation techniques for use in the application of security features in a fast-paced environment to meet deliverable deadlines.
    • Be a technical resource to the R&D and Operations teams.
    • Support and/or lead the development of focal length correlations to color (wavelength) and develop rigorous correlations between formulation properties and visual results of our products.
    • Be well versed in ink formulations technologies with an ability to explain complex processes with simple-to-understand communications to others.
    • Work with multi-functional team to maintain and improve formulations and process development while supporting corrective actions in troubleshooting ink or formulation issues as needed.
    • Coordinate development, scale-up and validation trials on new products and product modifications. 

    Qualifications

    Knowledge (Education/Training) or equivalent:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science or similar discipline required. Masters or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or similar discipline preferred.

    Technical Experience:

    • 5 years progressive experience in R&D, Formulation Development & Process Engineering.
    • Experience with Six Sigma/Lean Certification and/or Project Management Certification a plus.
    • Experience with color matching and Analysis (Hunter, LAB, particle sizing, rheology, etc.) highly desirable.
    • Be a subject matter expert with sharp analytical, trouble-shooting skills using effective analytical tools to successfully complete projects and accomplish day-to-day work.
    • In-depth knowledge and understanding of ink properties, correlation between wavelength and focal length, as well as the interaction between manufacturing operations and formulation issues.
    • Ability to work in cross-functional teams and/or as individual contributor as required with minimal supervision.
    • Experience and strong working knowledge of analytical equipment (as it relates to ink development) and the development of testing methodology.
    • Working knowledge of color formulation and how to control rheology and cure level with an ability to design experiments and run trials to be efficient in the development of formulation data and process improvement.
    • Experience effectively managing projects and/or project teams through thoughtful facilitation and creative idea exchange in results-oriented environment.
    • Great attention to detail with the ability to learn and effectively translate print (ink) quality from specifications to design to production.
