    The Research Technician in our Dalton, MA location offers a great opportunity to work in an environment that fosters learning and collaboration. We’re looking for a proactive person who seeks opportunities to provide assistance in the development of new next generation technology in the world of currency.  This position will support the Research group as we continue to develop processes and products that enhance performance of currency substrate and security feature integration for central banks around the globe. Work will require careful replication of established methods always aiming to minimize variation in execution.  Additionally, creativity in lab methods will be needed to develop new laboratory tests targeted to predict product behavior in Crane internal processes as well as in currency circulationQualities such as detail-orientation, internally motivated and results-driven are integral in this role. 



    • Prepare and test materials according to existing methods (chemical, physical, and optical)

    • Includes testing and analysis of raw materials, paper, security features, and printed banknotes

    • laboratory-scale banknote papermaking including quality watermark production and incorporation of security features in lab handsheets
    • Develop new laboratory set-ups and test methods that predict product performance in specific areas of interest depending on project
    • Works with researchers to understand request and clearly communicates results

    • Collate test samples, data and record results. Document results reporting with basic statistics including tables, graphs, photos and written reports.
    • Keeps a clean and orderly lab space. Participate in CBS and safety efforts to facilitate a safe, clean, efficient work environment.
    • Proactively follows safety practices and participate actively in our ongoing safety improvement innitiatives

    Education & Experience



    • High School Diploma or equivelant along with Five Years of Lab Experience; Or Associates Degree with Two Years of Lab Experience. BS degree in a lab science can substitute for years of experience
    • Experience in physical/mechanical property testing
    • Skill in working with chemicals including acids, bases, and solvents wearing personal protective equipment
    • Ability to follow established procedures; perform accurate mathematical calculations
    • Excellent ability to organize and record qualitative observations made during the work and specific data as necessary
    • Efficiently plan work load to accomplish additional tasks during “wait” periods of ongoing work
    • Able to learn quickly and manage multiple projects/tasks in parallel, with a good understanding of priorities
    • Ability to perform at a high level within a flexible, fast-changing environment
    • With a strong team mindset, able to work in a creative environment as an active team member while learning from others’ ideas and experiences
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office and able to learn other software applications as needed



    • Associates/Bachelors in Chemistry or related science/engineering preferred with 4+ years of progressive lab experience as a Research Technician
    • Experience in devising, testing, establishing, and implementing new procedures

    • Desire to continuously reduce variability in personal execution of methods while also seeking ways to improve current procedures along with the ability to document them
    • Strong analytical ability coupled with demonstrated troubleshooting skills

    • Experience in influential leadership role without direct supervisory responsibility such as leading efforts in safety and/or laboratory organizational activities
    • Familiarity with ISO standards and procedures
